Band suggestions: You Won’t

On a long drive back to Portland from a northern Maine seacoast town I decided to relive some musical favorites from past years at Bates – I played some Tallest Man on Earth, some Langhorne Slim, some Deer Tick and even some Elvis Perkins. It’s been almost two years since these bands were basically my go-to music and I’ve struggled to find anything since then along the same genre of these pseudo-folk-indie-pop stars that I’ve been as excited to listen to on repeat for three moths. So I’ve looked to other genres to fulfill my obsessive personal music interests.

At last, I can return. Boston natives You Won’t rock. They display the same vim of other-year favorites with reflections of recent musical trends – the more soulful-rock oriented influence of popular Mumford and Sons and the less formulaic electronics of Passion Pit’s diminishing popularity. The group’s first album, Skeptic Goodbye, is available for download on bandcamp.

Concert Review: Passion Pit at Boston’s House of Blues

Months ago, I was looking to see if there were any good shows during our winter break in Boston. Growing up outside of Boston gave me many opportunities throughout high school to catch great concerts in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville; so, any time that I’m home, I try to see a show or two if I can.  By some miracle, Passion Pit, based in Boston, were playing a show the last week I was home and the tickets were only $25. I immediately bought them; after missing out on their last concert in Boston (with Phoenix and Spoon, reviewed HERE), which sold out the first day, I knew I had to act fast.

There was a lot of excitement leading up to the show—it was like the cherry on top of my winter vacation. I’ve been listening to Passion Pit for a few months now and recently they’ve become extremely popular, so I knew there would be a lot of interest and a lot of different people at the concert. Concert Review: Fanfarlo and Freelance Whales (with Video)

Fanfarlo and Freelance Whales played in Boston at T.T. the Bear’s on December 17. Despite the fact that London’s indie-pop group Fanfarlo headlined, several Bates kids and I actually made the trek to see the openers, New York’s Freelance Whales.

Freelance Whales is Judah Dadone, Kevin Read, Doris Cellar, Jake Hyman and Chuck Criss.  They were recently signed onto Frenchkiss/Mom + Pop Records, and in my opinion deserve a lot more recognition than they’ve garnered so far. The group is rapidly gaining momentum considering the limited time they’ve been together.

Their show was a great success, and the packed, enthusiastic crowed they played for is a testament to the close following they’ve acquired. Read more »

Concert Review: The Miracle on Tremont Street (with Video)

Usually when you are awakened three hours before the alarm goes off, it’s a sign that you might be having a bad day. However, when I received such a call one morning in October while on a trip in San Francisco, the opposite was true.

The call alerted me to the lineup of the annual Miracle on Tremont Street sponsored by Boston’s WFNX, which featured three of my favorite indie rock acts, in concert order, Passion Pit, Phoenix and Spoon, and the concert was to be held in Boston’s historic Orpheum Theater. Read more »
