Concert Review: Snoop Dogg in Lewiston, Maine

There are few things that I can imagine more ridiculous than me meeting the rapper Snoop Dogg, the mastermind behind such classics as Gin & Juice, Drop it Like it’s Hot, and Beautiful.

Now, if you told me when I was a young naive first year student that not only would I, within the next four years, not only see Snoop Dogg live in concert but also that I would meet him, I would not have believed you in the slightest. Furthermore, if this was all to happen at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, I would have categorized this among the mythological, something only possible in the world of Harry Potter.

However, this actually did happen. I did see Snoop Dogg perform. I did meet Snoop Dogg. This did happen at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

However unlikely this concert might have been (and it certainly was unlikely — after the show, Snoop was asked if he had ever been to Maine… His response: Naw, man), this concert was actually pretty entertaining. His set list was a mixture of all kinds of rap hits, both his own and ones of his friends and colleagues. This was decidedly not a concert featuring deep album tracks or anything obscure. Despite the fact that popular rap is not at all my favorite music, I found my self singing along to each song (oh the power of commercial radio!).

There is a reason why musicians such as Snoop Dogg are so successful, and, indeed, there is a great deal of universality in his music. His beats are good for dancing to and his stage performances (as I have found out) are fairly dynamic and potent.

So, while the cost of admission may have been high, and the crowd may have been odd at best (I counted 25 middle school or younger kids and 3 pregnant women), this show was, much to my surprise, actually pretty cool.

I will speak briefly to the opening act, Dephonic, who I ultimately found to be pretty boring and generic. I spent some time at the merch table and cleaning up after the show, these guys were desperate to make fans out of us, you can google them, but I wouldn’t.

At any rate, I don’t think I will ever see Snoop Dogg again, I really do not need to do that again, but hey, who can argue with these bragging rights?
